Deze tekens zijn een combinatie van symboolletters (hoofdletters en kleine letters (a-z, AZ), cijfers (0-9), speciale tekens (!, @, #, $, enz.), leestekens en controletekens. Daarom kan zeggen dat elk teken zijn eigen ASCII-waarde heeft.
Wanneer we bijvoorbeeld een string invoeren als 'HELLO', slaat de computermachine de string die we hebben ingevoerd niet direct op. In plaats daarvan slaat het systeem de tekenreeksen op in hun equivalente ASCII-waarde, zoals '7269767679'. De ASCII-waarde van H is 72, E is 69, L is 76 en O is 79.
