2D-array kan worden gedefinieerd als een array van arrays. De 2D-array is georganiseerd als matrices die kunnen worden weergegeven als een verzameling rijen en kolommen.

Er worden echter 2D-arrays gemaakt om een relationele database-achtige datastructuur te implementeren. Het biedt het gemak om een groot deel van de gegevens in één keer vast te houden, die waar nodig aan een willekeurig aantal functies kunnen worden doorgegeven.
Hoe 2D-array te declareren
De syntaxis voor het declareren van een tweedimensionale array lijkt sterk op die van een eendimensionale array, en wordt als volgt gegeven.
int arr[max_rows][max_columns];
het produceert echter de datastructuur die er als volgt uitziet.
Bovenstaande afbeelding toont de tweedimensionale array, de elementen zijn georganiseerd in de vorm van rijen en kolommen. Het eerste element van de eerste rij wordt weergegeven door a[0][0] waarbij het getal dat in de eerste index wordt weergegeven het nummer van die rij is, terwijl het getal dat in de tweede index wordt weergegeven het nummer van de kolom is.
Hoe krijgen we toegang tot gegevens in een 2D-array?
Vanwege het feit dat de elementen van 2D-arrays willekeurig toegankelijk zijn. Net als bij eendimensionale arrays hebben we toegang tot de individuele cellen in een 2D-array door de indices van de cellen te gebruiken. Er zijn twee indices aan een bepaalde cel gekoppeld: de ene is het rijnummer en de andere het kolomnummer.
We kunnen echter de waarde die is opgeslagen in een bepaalde cel van een 2D-array opslaan in een variabele x door de volgende syntaxis te gebruiken.
int x = a[i][j];
waarbij i en j respectievelijk het rij- en kolomnummer van de cel zijn.
We kunnen elke cel van een 2D-array aan 0 toewijzen met behulp van de volgende code:

Het aantal elementen dat aanwezig kan zijn in een 2D-array zal altijd gelijk zijn aan ( aantal rijen * aantal kolommen ).
